IPL (intense pulsed light) machines release precisely controlled short bursts of light that are absorbed by the melanin pigment in hair. For the treatment to be effective, and the follicle damaged, the hair needs to be attached to it in the growing phase. Once this happens hair will no longer grow from this follicle. Because melanin is targeted, the ideal patient should have fair skin and dark hair, though a range of skin types and hair colours can be treated effectively. Grey / white hair has no melanin and therefore cannot be targeted.
An initial consultation and patch test must be carried out. The hair should not be plucked or waxed for one month before treatment, shaving is acceptable as hair is not torn out from the follicle. Goggles are worn to protect the eyes. Gel is applied to the skin and a shot of light is released. This typically feels like a flick from an elastic band. Treatments can be as short as 15 minutes, and conducted every 2 - 8 weeks depending on the site treated. Between 3-6 treatments are needed for maximum results.
