Intense pulsed light (IPL) offers a breakthrough in the treatment of sun damaged skin, brown spots, freckles, thread veins, scars, rosacea, acne and poor skin texture can all be successfully treated. IPL stimulates the fibroblasts within the skin, boosting collagen and elastin production. Tiny thread veins are blasted away and melanin causing dark patches in the skin is also targeted. Days after a treatment the melanin darkens and forms a crust on the skins surface before flaking off. The ideal patient should have fair skin, however, the machine comes with a range of settings which can treat many skin types.
An initial consultation and patch test needs to be carried out. The skin should be thoroughly cleansed and exfoliated, this can be done at home before coming for a treatment. Gel is applied to the skin before treatment begins and a series of pulses are released over the whole area to be treated. The pulses feel like a mild pin-prick, so no anaesthesia is needed. After the treatment the skin may look red but this usually disappears after a few hours.
